Now, for those who aren’t familiar, OER, or Open Educational Resources, are course materials under an open license which allows others to access and reuse them at no cost. There’s been a movement lately in institutions, particularly community colleges, to incorporate more OER materials as a way to curb the rising costs of higher education.

Algebra in Elementary Matters

Algebra might sound advanced, but it fits right into our primary (K-2) classroom! At its core, algebra is about finding patterns and solving puzzlesskills that even our youngest learners can start developing. For example, you can use simple equations like something + 3 = 5 and ask students what the “something” is. This helps them start thinking about missing pieces and how to solve for unknowns.

On September 4, 2024, I was emailing back and forth with a math teacher at a large high school I serve, trying to arrange a meeting with a vendor. After my last reply to her, the shooting at Apalachee High School occurred near her classroom. And nothing can ever be the same. The Columbine shooting happened in my first year of teaching. I felt tricked; out of all the things teaching was to me it had nothing to do with students being killed at school.
