Promoting Literacy: Cultivate a Reading Culture

September 8th is International Literacy Day, a great time to think about promoting a class culture that values reading. However, encouraging students to read in and out of class is challenging as small screens command much of their time and attention. Just four years ago, approximately 10% of my students were reading below grade level.

The science of reading, beyond phonics

More than 30 states have written legislation that requires schools to utilize scientifically researched instructional strategies. While I do believe that there will be some adjustment to find the right mix, I don’t think improved literacy results from aligning instruction to the science of reading will be cyclical or short-lived.
