One of my earliest projects as the Director of Environmental Education for a public school district in New York was in a middle school English Language Arts classroom. Students social-emotional needs were high, as was their eco-anxiety. This project encompassed science, data collection, SEL, ELA, social studies, and math.

Although I love teaching all subjects, I always choose English/language arts and social studies, in part because I love the challenge of engaging young leaners in these important subjects. Using this digital tool is a great way to deliver an engaging social studies lesson.

But for multilingual students like me whose native language is not English, the math classroom can be a daunting place. The linguistic supports I received in other content areas were not as present during math, in large part because of the assumption that math is a universal language. It should be joyful.
