Giving regular feedback to roughly 100 middle and high schoolers has been my greatest challenge as an English and writing teacher, and it hit home for me sometime in 2013. My challenges with the feedback load were officially impacting my health and family life. Students were getting the feedback they needed faster.

This was the toughest feedback I have ever received, but it helped me define the problem so I could figure out what to do about it.

Because we know that becoming a successful writer is crucial to a student’s overall trajectory at school , work , and as a citizen , teachers must identify the tools that can best support writing instruction including the overlapping processes of drafting, review, and revision. The act of writing, in and of itself, is not enough.

The university has created a way for automated software to give students in large STEM courses feedback on their writing in cases where professors don’t have time to grade hundreds of essays. After a writing fellow quickly reviews it, the score gets delivered to the student via the eCoach system.
