This year I have posted several blogs about grading and assessment. I encouraged teachers to stop taking grading home for two simple reasons: Grading in isolation robs us of the opportunity to have conversations with students as we assess their work and, ultimately, makes feedback one-sided and less effective.

In a blog post I wrote titled Ask Yourself, Why Am I Grading This? , I encourage teachers to think about the purpose of the work students are doing and evaluate whether it makes sense for them to invest their time and energy grading that work. How is one teacher supposed to grade all of the work that 150+ students complete?

“If I don’t grade it, students won’t do it.” ” This reasoning leaves teachers with piles of work to grade, but I wonder how much of that time spent assigning points to student work results in improved student performance. By the end of the semester, I had over a hundred assignments in my grade book.

Students submit work, teachers grade work, we move on. However, when we transitioned to remote learning I found myself falling into this cycle. I quickly had to figure out–how could I incorporate the feedback cycle that was so effective in my classroom but online? Sound like what happens in classrooms? Mine neither.
