In my last blog post titled, “ Stop Taking Grading Home ,” I explained how I use the Station Rotation Model to provide students with real-time feedback as they work instead of taking grading home. I had one teacher ask me what I do when a student arrives at my teacher-led station and has not done the work required.

We also stress the importance of providing students with flexible means. All students can make progress toward firm goals, but they may need to take different paths to get there. Some students will move more slowly and benefit from additional support, scaffolds, and signage to get to the desired destination.

The University of Michigan’s M-Write program is built on the idea that students learn best when they write about what they’re studying, rather than taking multiple-choice tests. The M-Write program started in 2015 as a way to give more writing feedback to students by enlisting other students to serve as peer mentors to help with revisions.

You need to deliver effective instruction to your students, meet the demands of your school and district, and manage your own personal responsibilities, all at the same time. You have good intentions about giving feedback that is timely and purposeful for your students or teachers. Peer feedback works using this method, too.

I encouraged teachers to stop taking grading home for two simple reasons: Grading in isolation robs us of the opportunity to have conversations with students as we assess their work and, ultimately, makes feedback one-sided and less effective. In that model, students hit four stations over the course of two days.
