For a lot of us, it has felt as though we are spending more of our time as graders determining whether a student completed an assignment with or without AI than we are actually providing meaningful feedback. I still assign my students literary analysis essays, journal prompts, in-class presentations, and reading comprehension questions.

For example, if they’re writing an essay, help them focus on just the intro first. Provide Personal Feedback Telling a struggling student how they are doing, and if they need to try harder, doesn’t always help them improve. What struggling learners need is specific feedback they can use to actually improve.

Blum (2020) argues that grades provide minimal feedback, they deemphasize learning, and what they actually measure is inconsistent (10-14). My first system failed to appreciate the value of clear expectations and the inescapable necessity that at the end of the day my students needed to walk out of my class with a grade.

For example, if you want students to support claims with relevant details, that expectation should be stated on a rubric that is given to students well in advance of when the assignment is due, and should be the focus of lessons, formative feedback, and student reflection. Writing and reasoning get better with feedback and effort.
