Teachers Believe That AI Is Here to Stay in Education. How It Should Be Taught Is Debatable.

Edsurge

One of the perks of Angie Adams job at Samsung is that every year, she gets to witness how some of the countrys most talented emerging scientists are tackling difficult problems in creative ways. Theyre working on AI tools that can recognize the signs of oncoming panic attacks for kids on the autism spectrum in one case, and figuring out how drones can be used effectively to fight wildfires in another.

Due Dates Provide a Structure for Spaced Learning

Faculty Focus

Every semester, a student hoping to “earn their desired grade” approaches me at the last minute, asking to make up all their missed assignments. I have a standard missed due date policy, 1) let me know (communication) and 2) get it done in a week (extended deadline). The students requesting to stockpile assignments at the end of the semester usually had not completed the assignment at all or had not completed the assignment even with an extended deadline.

Fixing Your Classroom (or Playground) Design Flaws

Teacher Toms Blog

I was recently leaving a downtown store. When I came to the exit door, I saw that it had a handle. I grabbed and pulled. The door didn't budge. I then, counter-intuitively, pushed and the door swung open. This is a prime example of a failure in design: a handle means "pull" and a push plate means "push." Indeed, every time you see a sign on a door reading "push" or "pull," you're looking at a design flaw that someone has clumsily attempted to correct.

Little Surprises

A Year of Reading

Thank you to Two Writing Teachers for creating an amazing community of writers and a safe, welcoming space to write and share. I like little surprises. I like when I take the dust jacket off of a book to find some little surprise under the cover. I like that the Pigeon is hidden in all of the Mo Willems’ books. I like when a friend sends a meme that is a match to how I am feeling.

The Life of a Conflicted Teacher

Good morning to all! It’s been a few days, and I’m coming to the realization that part of my inability to write is where I’m at right now in teaching. I’m leaving for school between 6:45 am and 7:00 am most days. At my old job, I was able to write because I left at 7:30 am. Those 30 minutes make a difference! It was an “ah-ha” moment for sure!
