What do you think of when you think about fact fluency? Do you think about your students who can get answers quickly? Do you think about the ones who are able to answer all the questions correctly on a test? Fact fluency is about much more than speed and accuracy. Fluency also includes flexibility and appropriate strategy use (nctm.org). Flexibility tends to be the most difficult part of fact fluency to teach, and often feels very unnatural.
