On November 20th, 2015, I received an email in my inbox that would change my teaching career—it was from a stranger. My principal noticed how much work I was putting into redesigning my curriculum and had nominated me. That has been the status quo in most of the schools I’ve worked in. That’s when the email came.

About two years ago Houston Independent School District , with its 283 schools and 215,000 students, went in search of an LMS that would help teachers create and use coursework that was both digital and aligned to Texas state standards (Texas pointedly does not use the Common Core).

Four of our seven elementary schools are ranked in the top 20 schools in Pennsylvania, and our high school forensics team is recognized as one of the best teams in the nation.

The network began the Greenfield Schools design project to research what the future of school could be, with the goal of opening two new schools in 2015—an elementary school and a middle school. The first Greenfield Schools launched in August 2015 in New Haven, CT.

It’s also the fact that when a school hires a singular position to own a large change, it sends a message that one person owns the responsibility to change practices across an entire staff.
