In our book UDL and Blended Learning , Dr. Katie Novak and I encourage teachers to work toward firm, often standards-aligned, goals. If the learning objective is for students to craft a strong argument, you can provide them with different levels of support and different ways of demonstrating that skill.

I explain that I use blended learning models, like Station Rotation and Whole Class Rotation, to create the time and space needed to move assessment into the classroom. If students are working 0n an essay, I dedicate one station each day to providing real-time feedback as they write.

It’s not that my students aren’t writing. This paper took them about 3 weeks to write from the time they started their research to when they finished their final draft and works cited page. Since January, I have not brought a single stack of digital papers home to grade! It’s been amazing!

Planning is critical to creating meaningful learning opportunities for students. I enjoyed the tactile experience of writing down my events, notes to myself, and lesson ideas. Provides a place to write notes, but lesson needs are kept separately in a binder or in separate files on a computer. For years, I used a daily planner.
