In our book UDL and Blended Learning , Dr. Katie Novak and I encourage teachers to work toward firm, often standards-aligned, goals. If the learning objective is for students to craft a strong argument, you can provide them with different levels of support and different ways of demonstrating that skill.

I explain that I use blended learning models, like Station Rotation and Whole Class Rotation, to create the time and space needed to move assessment into the classroom. If students are working 0n an essay, I dedicate one station each day to providing real-time feedback as they write.

During that window of time, I was able to give every student written feedback on the section of his/her essay they were currently working on. I realize that moving assessment into the classroom requires a shift in mindset and the strategic use of blended learning models, but it is hands down the BEST decision I’ve made this year.

Ability to maintain one calendar for teachers who share the same students, which helps to avoid assigning “big assignments” like assessments and essays at the same time. It can be easily shared with other teachers or administrators. It can be shared with others by making photocopies but does not allow for easy collaboration among teachers.
