When I work with schools that have already adopted the UDL framework, they immediately recognize how blended learning can help teachers to implement many of the principles of UDL more effectively. I believe that blended learning models can make putting UDL into practice more manageable. Engagement. Self-Regulation.

When I ask teachers, “How would you describe a successful online or blended learning course? ” Most teachers include some form of the word “engagement” in their answers. So, it makes sense that teachers are frustrated when they feel like students are not engaging. What would that look like?”

Conversely, teachers will have more success engaging students attending class in person if they build more agency, autonomy, and flexibility into their lessons. As I wrap my mind around the complexities of the concurrent classroom, I believe blended learning models can make this challenging situation more manageable.

Discussion can be a powerful tool for learning yet engaging all students in equitable discussions can be challenging. When I began teaching, I was frustrated because in-class discussions were dominated by a small group of vocal students while the rest of the class sat quietly avoiding eye contact.
