Turnitin, a longtime leader in the plagiarism-detection market, released a new tool within six months of ChatGPT’s debut to identify AI-generated writing in students’ assignments. Most of these campuses have licensed Turnitin’s plagiarism detector since 2014.

Communicate major assignments and assessments in advance and give students opportunities to plan their time and effort. In a classroom focused on avoiding errors and completing tasks, students may see the purpose of a math assignment as completing items 1-17 without any errors so it can be checked and graded.

In order to write an academic integrity policy for those cheating with AI, universities and colleges look for documentation and, thus, many of us use Turnitin.com or other plagiarism detectors. Students who did not receive high scores were required to discuss it with me personally, similar to what I do when teaching old-fashioned plagiarism.
