In our newest book, Shift Writing into the Classroom with UDL and Blended Learning , Dr. Katie Novak and I guide teachers in creating the time and space to support all parts of the writing process in the classroom. If there is only one pathway provided, students may question their ability to complete a writing task successfully.
One of the challenges teachers in concurrent classrooms face is feeling torn between the needs of students in two learning landscapes simultaneously. Often, the students in class monopolize the teacher’s time and attention because they can raise a hand or blurt out a question. Step 2: Submit Your Question or Request for Help.
To recap, metacognition is a cognitive ability that allows learners to consider their thought patterns, approaches to learning, and understanding of a topic or idea. As the year comes to a close, I encourage teachers to take a moment and collect feedback from students about their experiences learning online in the last few months. I think it’s likely that schools will begin the year online or adopt a blended learning model that allows for fewer students on campus at one time.
Yet, it seemed wrong to pretend the year didn’t happen or that I learned nothing from it. When it comes to connecting with your colleagues, I’ve seen teams of teachers commit to a book study as a way to connect and learn. 2 Providing a one-size-fits-all experience doesn’t work in any learning landscape.
I’ve spent the last four months working with teachers all over the country (virtually, of course) as they navigate the uncharted waters of online and blended learning.
