My doctoral research focused on the multidimensional motivational construct of teacher engagement in blended learning environments. In our newest book, Shift Writing into the Classroom with UDL and Blended Learning , Dr. Katie Novak and I guide teachers in creating the time and space to support all parts of the writing process in the classroom. All of these factors may contribute to a lack of motivation to produce thoughtful writing at home.

I want students to complete assignments because they are meaningful, interesting, and rewarding, not because they are worth points. I want students to know that their teachers are there to support them as they work because learning is a process and everyone needs feedback and help to improve.

As an advocate of blended learning, my focus is on helping teachers design and facilitate learning experiences that are differentiated for specific groups of students and personalized for individual learners. 3 Students are capable of self-directed learning. If not, what would they enjoy learning? This is not new.

In fact, the switch to hybrid and fully virtual learning during the pandemic highlighted how students can become distracted and lose motivation when they are seemingly hiding behind a screen, causing many frustrated parents and teachers to loathe the use of technology in learning.
