Too many discussions of edtech focus on tools (like tablets, clickers, learning-management systems, smart boards, etc). More thought should be spent on the design of the classroom itself. Two years ago we renovated an old computer lab into an active learning classroom. We’re not alone in redesigning high-tech classrooms.

To find out what that really looks like—and more importantly, if it works—the campus is also conducting a major study over the next year to assess active learning in the new building.

Every new version of Microsoft PowerPoint allowed instructors to embed more and more media and wow students with visually appealing graphics. In addition to using technology in my own biology courses, I also work with faculty across the country on how to teach with technology through an inclusive lens.
